On the outskirts of Clarksdale, Mississippi, at the end of a remote dirt road, stood a small, ramshackle church. It was not a place of worship, but a place where many sought refuge in times of poverty. Legend has it that the structure was raised by hand on the shoulders of two dozen men. The exterior remained plain and nondescript, but the interior glowed with stolen neon signs, Christmas lights and a jukebox donated by the sheriff's son. It was a decidedly worldly place where locals who knew where to find it could share their evenings, socialise and banish their troubles. They called their ramshackle joint Saint Julep's and the oral histories collected there paint a picture of this magical place where «smiles were always free and redemption had the unmistakable aroma of sweet peppermint».
