Philip Sava's early research pushed the boundaries of postmodern fiction and revealed fantastic worlds that convinced many that they were in fact real. Sava's kaleidoscopic collections, the centrepiece of which is Memoirs of a Trespasser, were based on real experiences from his exotic travels, but were imbued with a hallucinatory inventiveness that set his work apart from others in the genre. Although Sava had collaborators all over the world, he spent most of his time in solitude on a ranch in southern Madagascar. When asked by the press about his cloistered lifestyle, he would notoriously reply, «Who needs love when you have cognac?«
