Cape Heartache is the only American contribution to Philip Sava's popular series of discovery novels. Based largely on an expedition he undertook as a teenager to the Pacific Northwest in 1881, it is generally considered the most outspoken of his works. The novel, which revolves around a house he built in a coastal grove of ancient trees, documents his romance with a young woman of Nehalem Indian descent. The plot revolves around the themes of leaving the familiar and finding solace and solace in a new place.
